In the Bay Area, the first priority is that they be licensed and have a county health certificate or clearance. Consider the caterer’s reputation, their length of time in business, their specialties, the number of weddings they do in one day, and the cost. Some caterers have a mobile kitchen and can cater anywhere. Some are very creative and can help you with ideas that will enhance your wedding theme. Ask if they specialize in buffets, sit-down meals, or food stations. They can order all the tables, service, and linens you will need. They also will supply the servers needed. Be certain that your contract specifies exactly what is included and what are additional charges.
While many caterers have access to dozens of facilities, if you have one or two locations that you prefer, be sure to book your facility first before committing to a certain caterer. Many locations have their own caterer, or a list of “preferred” caterers. You do not want to be disappointed that your caterer’s only available location for your wedding date is 50 miles out of town.
Beverage catering is still in the realm of the caterer, or you can hire a separate caterer for your beverages. Discuss an open bar and bartender and determine how long they will operate. Ask if unopened bottles may be returned and request that bottles only be opened when the last one is finished.
Caterers will do the set-up and clean up, freeing you to enjoy your own party.
