The presenting of a wedding day token is an adaptation of a 16th Century French custom that was reserved for nobles and kings. These objects were originally of great value. When they were introduced into other European courts, handmade lace, handblown glass and sugar coated candy were often substituted for gold and precious stones.

Traditionally, sugar coated almonds, usually wrapped in lace or netting are used as part of the favors. Chocolate roses and other chocolate delicacies are often substituted and are justifiably becoming more and more popular.

The favor holders can be simple or quite elaborate and beautiful with glass or porcelain figurines and even miniature Teddy Bears. Couples often match the favor to their personal style or theme.

The favor is usually tied with a ribbon containing the first names of the bride and groom with their wedding date printed on the ribbon or on an attached card.
