Music is the gift of song that you give your guests. It weaves a thread of continuity throughout your wedding day. It starts with pre-ceremony music while guests arrive, then weaves into the processional and the recessional at the wedding site as the attention is focused on the bride and groom. Transitional music entertains guests while you are having your formal photographs taken, or in the receiving line. Music during dinner and for dancing is an integral part of the reception.
When deciding your performing artists, try to match your style or theme, making certain the artist specializes in weddings and is knowledgeable in the type of music you want played. This especially holds true for ethnic weddings. Ideas include a string quartet or harpist as a prelude; an organist or vocalist during the ceremony; a piano keyboard or guitar during the transitional time; any of the above during dinner; and an orchestra, band or DJ for dancing. Reserve your favorite musician early if your wedding falls in June through October and in December.

Selecting your DJ should be done with great care and attention given to the personality of the person. He or she can make or break a party! Be certain to choose a reputable company with impeccable corporate references. Ask your Wedding Consultant, site manager, photographer or caterer for referrals as these people actually see the DJ in action on more than one occasion, whereas a bride-referral is much more subjective. Besides personality and appropriate attire, ask about the equipment. CD’s are the preferred medium, with tapes running a close second. Most modern DJ’s use a computer to track and select music from their inventory.
The DJ will be your Master of Ceremonies to assist and sometimes insure good timing for the meal, dancing, cake cutting, toasts, bouquet and garter toss. Insist beforehand that music and commentary be at background level during the reception and meal. People wish to use this time for conversation. You or your Wedding Consultant should not have to ask more than once that the volume be lowered. Ask that background music be provided during breaks; have the number and length of breaks and the DJ’s name in your contract.
Your DJ should be familiar with your site and know any electrical requirements. Electrical cords and equipment should be set up safely and securely. If ethnic or bilingual communication and music is important, then seek out a DJ who can provide these services. Determine availability and costs for possible overtime.
